A bit about Dr. Nickell

Dr. Nickell owes his passion for caring for animals to his upbringing in rural Missouri, where the livestock easily outnumber the people. For him, veterinary medicine was the family business - you’d frequently find him joining his father, a large animal veterinarian, on his many local farm calls.

Dr. Nickell received his DVM from the University of Missouri, after which he completed a one-year small animal rotating internship at the University of Florida. Anesthesiology had been an interest of his early on in vet school and after his internship, he began a three-year residency at the University of California, Davis. After finishing his residency, Dr. Nickell completed a Post-Doctoral fellowship in anesthesiology at Colorado State University before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he was a clinical instructor for one year. Dr. Nickell has pursued a broad range of clinical experiences including serving as a staff anesthesiologist at Colorado State University, a clinical instructor at Midwestern University, and a staff anesthesiologist in private practice in San Diego prior to joining Summit.

As the anesthesiologist at Summit, Dr. Nickell helps ensure staff are appropriately trained to anesthetize, monitor, and support each patient before, during, and after their anesthetic episode. He frequently consults on cases to guarantee that patients receive exceptional pain management.

When not in the hospital, Dr. Nickell enjoys spending time with his Fiancée and two cats. He is an avid fan of the Missouri Tigers and Kansas City Chiefs, and also enjoys hiking, fishing, kayaking, and other outdoor activities.
