Department Manager

Summit Veterinary Referral Center is hiring a Department Manager

Summit Veterinary Referral Center is a multi-specialty and emergency veterinary hospital located in Tacoma, WA.  We provide 24-hour emergency and critical care as well as cardiology, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, neurology, radiology and surgery services. Summit operates one of the largest veterinary emergency and critical care services in region.  As a tertiary referral hospital, Summit is the most-capable ICU in the South Sound and we care for the region’s most critical and complicated patients.

We are looking for an individual to join our team in an effort to provide expanded leadership and support to our growing team. Come make a significant difference in the lives of people and animals. The position reports to our Hospital Director and Senior Department Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Medical Directors and Assistant Managers to provide exceptional medical outcomes, rewarding employment opportunities and high-performance business results.

  • Provide direct supervision for Assistant Manager and service staff.

  • Build a strong team culture focused on pride, recognition, support, mentorship and unity in purpose.

  • Recruit, interview, and hire for assigned department as needed to meet staffing goals.

  • Lead the training and development of your assigned team to provide excellent triage and medical care capabilities.

  • Oversee scheduling of department staff in conjunction with Doctor schedules.

  • Consistently drive improvements in service performance including but not limited to, staff engagement, client satisfaction, successful medical outcomes, retention, financial efficiency and regulatory compliance.

  • Complete and deliver performance evaluations for department as necessary.

  • Oversee all medical inventory and equipment needs for assigned department in partnership with hospital support services.

  • Oversee periodic inventory for assigned department.

  • Receive and investigate patient care complaints in conjunction with the Client Services Manager, ER Medical Director and Hospital Director and respond as needed.

  • Ensure that patient services comply with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and requirements.

  • Meet budgetary goals for service.

  • Work closely with Human Resources team to support all areas of support staff needs.

  • Represent the ECC service amongst the management team and facilitate service integration, and collaboration across all other service lines.  

  • Oversee all department level communication and updates.

  • Work closely with Client Services Manager to meet the ongoing needs of assigned department, Clients and hospital in general.

  • Create and revise protocols and policies as necessary in conjunction with the management and leadership teams.

  • Maintain optimal department staff capabilities across all days and times as needed to meet business needs.

  • Facilitate ongoing growth, training, advancement and career development goals for all service staff.

  • Lead the shaping and planning of assigned department to meet future growth outcomes.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the right candidate should have good

knowledge of Microsoft Office products such as word processing and spreadsheet software. It will also be

necessary to become proficient in the use of the practice management software and scheduling software.

Communication Skills: Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, exhibit leadership

and organizational confidence, and the ability to present material to large and small groups. Maintain a

harmonious, constructive and respectful relationship with those contacted in the course of work of all skill

levels. Can express ideas well leading to strong buy-in and alignment with others.

 

Education: College degree preferred. CVPM, LVT, CVT or other veterinary certifications given preference.

 

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years management experience directly supervising 20 staff or more. Previous veterinary medicine management in an ER department preferred. 

Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, public speaking, and presentation skills.

  • Solid working knowledge of budgeting, sales, business development, and strategic planning.

  • Strong understanding of recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and staff leadership practices.

  • Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies.

  • Must be able to work across all days of the week as needed.

Benefits:
- Compensation: $75,000-$80,000 annually DOE
